Who We Are

Branch Out is a youth-led conservation organisation based in Cape Town, empowering young adults (18+) to connect with nature, build practical skills, and take meaningful action for the environment.

At Branch Out, conservation isn’t just volunteering; it’s a chance to grow. Through hands-on activities like snare patrols, vegetation restoration projects, beach clean-ups, and botany walks, we help young people develop real-world skills, confidence, and purpose.

But it’s also about connection. We’re building a vibrant, inclusive community where youth can meet like-minded peers, form lasting friendships, and grow together. We believe impact happens when we learn by doing, especially when we do it together. That’s why collaboration is at the heart of everything we do. We partner with conservation organisations, local businesses, and community groups to support and empower our youth every step of the way.

Whether you're just curious or ready to take action, Branch Out is a space to learn, grow, and make a difference - together!

Meet the team

Julia Watson

Julia has been passionate about plants and wildlife for as long as she can remember. She holds an MSc in Systematics and Biodiversity Science from the University of Cape Town and has worked extensively in botanic gardens across Australasia, as well as in ecological restoration and conservation. With a deep love for conservation and extensive expertise and experience in this industry, she is dedicated to making environmental work more accessible to young people.

Diede Mekkering

Diede has an MSc in Forest and Nature Conservation from Wageningen University, where she focused on the relationship between people and nature. Her biggest passion is strengthening the connection between people and nature in a way that benefits both parties, particularly the environment. As a young conservationist in Cape Town, she found it difficult to access opportunities to get involved, which led to the creation of Branch Out. When she’s not working, she’s likely outdoors; hiking, camping, or swimming in the ocean.
